Win a copy of Leftovers by Laura Wiess!

Glitter Words

Ooh, contest week! I love contests, I really do.
17170399.JPG Today, we start with a copy of Leftovers by Laura Wiess. (Note: My copy is an Advance Reader’s Edition, and the cover’s a little scratched, but the inside is pristine!). The story of best friends Blair and Ardith will keep you riveted to the page — it’s an exploration of what might drive teenage girls to the edge (absent or irresponsible parents, a-holes at school, the “boys will be boys” attitude that dominates and excuses too much). Loved this book.
To win your copy, all you have to do is tell one person about my new book Violet by Design (official release day is tomorrow!). You can tell them anything — that you’ve heard about it, that you liked Violet on the Runway (if you did!), that you read the author’s blog — whatevs. Then just comment below and tell me who you told (bonus for librarians and booksellers!). That’s it; you’re entered.
I’ll choose a winner next week, so you have all week to spread the word! Thank you! Tune in for tomorrow’s contest.
PS-Fun to read: Janet Malcolm compares Gossip Girl to Nabokov — and does it well!
And thanks to The Story Siren for liking Violet on the Runway (unexpectedly in fact, which is even more of a joy for me!)

  2. Hey, Melissa,
I was at an author school visit on Friday and two girls were absolutely raving about Violet on the Runway. We chatted about your book, your new book and I showed them your blog.. :) Enjoy tomorrow!

I can honestly say (with no exaggerations) that I told at least two thousand people. I wrote a review on Violet on the Runway for my school newspaper and I was completely raving about how much I loved it. :) Kaitlyn Hodge.

  7. i told all my friends. seriously, i got my friend tracy hooked on your story so she is psyched for the new book. havent told those librarians yet cuz i havent gotten to the library, but when i do, i will make them order several copies!

  8. Sherry says:

You know what’s interesting? I was just telling my friend today about how your book sounds so cool. Unfortunately, my library takes a while to get new books, so I haven’t had the chance to read either, but it does sound cool, and I have put in an order for the book ^_^.
I never really considered ever associating Lolita with the Gossip Girl series, and after that article, I do have to say, Cecily von Ziegesar’s intentions of writing that series are unknown to me. I never considered that aspect of the book, that in some way, it is not only about the glamour of that life, but the pity of it too. I was actually talking to an author the other day, and she discussed how she feels that there is no thematic layering to the Gossip Girl series and I heartily agreed. Shamefully, I have to say though, my reasoning has been proven wrong. Thanks for the new perspective :).

  9. Abbey says:

    1. I lent the book to a girl in my newspaper class, who then passed it around her book club– all 12 of them bought a copy.
    2. I begged my newspaper advisor to let me to a review of it (all positive, of course!) but he complained that the book wouldn’t appeal to boys… but the 30+ kids on the newspaper heard the outrage.
    3. I was complaining to the library about when they’d get around to ordering your book (and Sarah Dessen’s “Just Listen”). They say they’re out of money. I offered to give them cash and they laughed. 8(

  10. Katie says:

    Hey melissa
just wanted to say how i cant wait to buy your new book and ive told about 5 of my friends and they all totally wanted to read it and that may not sound like much but most of them go to huge public schools and they said that they are going to tell their friends about it
    so enjoy your week
    Luv ya
    Katie

Don’t count me in for today’s contest (I already have a copy of leftovers). Just wanted to say that I’m spreading the word about your contests over at my blog. Contests = happiness. Violet by Design in stores = even more happiness. :)
And I totally love the Gossip Girls/Nabokov article. Lolita is one of my favorite books because it’s so scary how a great writer can make you sympathize with such a creepy main character. I’m sending it along to all my lit major friends! :)

  12. Ink says:

I told a friend to keep an eye out for Violet on the Runway, since I can’t seem to find a copy anywhere. This led to a LONG discussion on how I found out about the book, your blog etc.

  13. Nabi says:

Hmmm…well, a few weeks ago I requested my library to buy your book, Violet on the Runway, since they didn’t have it. And now it’s on order along with Violet By Design (YAY!).
Okay, but since that was a while ago, I also told my older sister and now she’s super excited to read your books!
    I hope that counts. :)

  14. Just popping by to wish you a happy release day! I can’t wait to see what Violet has been up to! :)

  15. Carolyn says:

I told my mama–a librarian in charge of acquisitions–about your fabulous new book! Now if only the state of California would up the amount of money in the book budget…
You rock! Thanks for all the fun contests!
    ~Carolyn

Congratulations, and I’m looking forward to Violet!

  17. Stephanie Wade says:

My school library doesn’t have your books (bummer, right?!) and so I asked my librarian to check them out. (She takes me pretty seriously when it comes to books– I read like nonstop.)
YAY! Congrats on your new book!
    =)

  18. Andy says:

I told my girlfriend about it.

  19. Tee hee I told Wafa all about you, so that counts right?
    ;}

  20. Grace says:

I told my best friend, Miranda, about it.
PS. i’m gonna start bugging the library i go to to get violet by design and violet on the runway because they don’t have it yet and i really really want to read it even if i don’t win it in a contest! :)
