The winner of the box full of books, chosen at random from the entries, is Brandy Graves! Thank you guys so much for the pics and tweets and fb love!
This week I have a super fun giveaway–two books by the effervescent Maureen Johnson. The prize is: The Name of the Star in paperback, and its sequel, The Madness Underneath, in matching hardcover design (see above).
To enter to win these books, go through the paces below. Extra points for comments, because I like to hear your voices, and if you’re looking for something to talk about, maybe we discuss the redesign for these covers? The original hardcover of The Name of the Star looked like this (right), so what do you think of the change?

I haven’t read any of your books yet but I plan on it! So great to find a new YA author I haven’t read yet. Thanks for the MJ giveaway!
I’m so stoked about this
I think I like the redesigned covers better. After seeing the original cover I thought it was a steampunk book, which it’s obviously not. I think the new covers fit the books better.
I think those new covers are beautiful. I love the font & the photos and… everything else really.
Definitely like the new cover more than the old one.
I’m so looking forward to The Madness Underneath. The Name of the Star was one of the best books I read last year and the cover redesign is great!
I really liked the original cover a lot, and though I understand the reason for the re-design, I’m much less of a fan. I feel as though the original cover had much more of a mystery feel, and the new covers have much more of a horror feel.
Though suspenseful, TNOTS isn’t a horror book! So the cover just doesn’t match well with the story, in my mind. It’s also a cover that I would have been MUCH LESS likely to pick up and investigate if I weren’t already familiar with Maureen.
That being said, I’m the kind of book nerd who really hates it when the books I own in a series don’t match, so I’d love a chance to win!
Thanks!
Love the new cover – I think it will attract a bigger audience.
I really love the hardback covers- The paperback looks nice too!
I like both cover designs! Although, I do have to say that I’m not a fan of when book series change looks in the middle of the series. I like all of my covers to match! It has happened a couple of times to me, too.
I don’t like the new cover that much. The font it’s a little too neon for me. I liked the old one better. But I can get used to it.
Is the contest open internationaly?
Yup, international is cool.
I just heard about the name of the star last week and have already finished it! looking forward to a short wait before the madness underneath is here!
Also, I’m liking the continuity between the new covers, but I really liked the old one as well!
I’m not a huge fan of the redesign actually. I like the original a lot
Wow! I love the new cover, but I love the old cover… I CAN’T DECIDE WHICH IS BEST. DISASTER! I love Maureen, I hope I win! :3 DFTBA!
I am so excited that The Madness Underneath will finally be published! I have been waiting for it since the second I finished The Name of the Star. I like the new cover, but I’m a little sad that my copy of TMU won’t match my copy of TNOTS. It is nice to have the same style covers for a book series. I love the new look of the title! It is spooky.
Looking forward to the second book!
I cannot express how excited I am for this.
The hardcover is so pretty! But I think the new covers are a better fit with the series. So excited to read the new book!
I liked the original cover better. The new one is too monochromatic tells less about the story. But I love the book regardles s Maureen is a phenomenal writer and I can’t wait to get the next book.
I loved the old cover, but I think the new ones are growing on me the more I look at them!
I liked the old cover better (more of a mystery feeling, and the font on the new covers is just too horror-y, plus I’m not a big fan of the colors), but the new cover will probably attract more readers, so all good. And I’m glad they at least kept “Shades of London”.
Thank you for the giveaway!
I prefer the new cover style, it fits the creepiness factor. The original looks more like historical fiction to me.
Looking forward to those books!
I prefer the hardback design, but I like the new paperback one as well.
So excited for The Madness Underneath! My students and I have been waiting for it forever!
I really like the paperbacks but hate when publishers change in the middle of a series.
I’ve been meaning to get around to reading this for ages! I love the new cover designs because of the almost shadowy feel they have. Plus the colours are absolutely gorgeous in all of their glowing pastel glory.
I like the old cover. I don’t know why people mess with covers sometimes. I usually end up liking the old covers better!
I don’t know which cover I like better, actually. The hardcover design does kind of have the “girl in a dress” thing going for it, but I do still kind of like it. On the other hand, the paperback design seems a little iffy…
[...] Maureen Johnson’s “Shades of London” ghost/murder mystery books! Oh, so do you? Win a book! Win two! And for non-winners, have no fear–the second book in the series, The Madness Underneath, will [...]
I really liked the original cover better but I understand why covers need to be changed.
I love the new covers so much better! And great post c:
I must say, I always liked the original cover but I think the new covers best portray the chilling and horror aspect of the novels. I can’t wait for The Madness Underneath!
The Name of the Star was so good!
I like the colors of the redesign, but I like the original cover better overall.
