Welcome to the fourth post of my Release Week Cover Stories extravaganza! (Lovestruck Summer was officially released on Tuesday!) I use the word extravaganza because each day, as I interview a new author about their cover, I will also be giving away a copy of the book we’re talking about. To enter to win, just leave a comment about the Cover Story. I’ll choose a winner exactly a week later.

Jenny Han is a Carolina graduate, so she and I can talk Chapel Hill and pretty much geek out over basketball. I am so excited to read her new release The Summer I Turned Pretty, which shares a release date with Lovestruck Summer! So here’s Jenny’s Cover story:

“I sat down with my editor and my designer and I gave them a mood board of a bunch of images I liked. I wanted something pretty and classic and nostalgic.

pretty.jpg“My editor let me give a lot of input, which I will be forever grateful for. I got to pick the models, which is basically like choosing which Barbie doll should go with which Ken doll– soooo fun. The hardest character to cast was Jeremiah, because apparently blond teenage male models are in short supply in NY. It took us a while to find the right one, but in the end, I loved who we picked. I especially loved the girl, because she was so fresh and sweet-looking and also she has those adorable freckles.

“They ended up doing the shoot at Coney Island. They shot like, a million pictures and the one we picked was literally right at the end of the roll. The sun was setting, and even though you couldn’t see the beach, there was just this beautiful beachy light. It felt like summer to me.

“The first time I saw the cover, I could not stop staring at it. Love at first sight, I swear. And I continue to be in love with it!”

I love how involved Jenny got to be with her photo shoot–the most involved I’ve heard with an author so far! Casting models? Awesome. And yes, this looks like golden moments of summer to me for sure. Sigh.

So, for a chance to win my early copy of The Summer I Turned Pretty, comment below and let me know what you think of the cover. Does it say summer to you?

One more day left of the release week fun!

PS-Nisha Sharma interviewed me about writing this week, so go read the interview if you have time!

it does. i imagine them walking on the beach at sunset, maybe off to hang out with some friends, just relaxing and laughing and having a good time. the sun light is awesome, not one you usually see on books – which makes it a perfect summer snapshot.

  2. Steph Su says:

It’s hard to believe there’s a shortage of blond teenage males in NYC, lol. And it’s also really difficult to understand how hard photo shoots are until you do one! I love the cover though. It’s what made me attracted to the book first–well, that and Jenny being the author, of course. :)

  3. Alea says:

Wow wow wow! This is so exciting, I’m so happy she got to give that much input. And loving the mood boards, I’m all about mood boards!
The cover is very beautiful it just works!

  4. JenP says:

What a great idea for the collage!

  5. Kimmy Lane says:

The cover looks very summery. I am so glad that it is warming up now.

  6. summer says:

very exciting. I usually don’t like models on covers cause I think it’s kinda cheesy but this is very classic. The sun in the background is just great.

  7. Lauren says:

I love the cover and I think it perfectly captures the feeling of summer!

  8. Em says:

This definitely feels like summer to me and I love how the guys are partially hidden and the girl is front and center. :)

  9. Holly says:

Where are all the blonds in NYC? COME OUT OF HIDING! lol
    I love the cover, though.

  10. Amber says:

Lol that cracked me up on the shortage of blondes in NYC. I live in the midwest, there are blondes everywhere! The cover acutally puts me in that summery mood! I love it!

  11. I forgot to say that I love the way the fonts and text colors echo the sunset. Gorgeous!

  12. Ashley says:

That’s so cool that she had so much input! The cover totally screams summer to me… so pretty. ♥

  13. Shelly Burns says:

It is a great summer photo! I just love hearing about the covers of these books. It’s interesting how they are created, the input or lack of input the author has, and how they can change before the book is actually printed.

  14. Nora says:

The sunset on the cover definitely makes me think of summer evenings. Beautiful!

  15. Brenda C says:

Ooooo… Love triangle! I love the girl on the cover, too. The summer hair and the sun kissed freckles. The sunset makes me want to find out what happens when the sun goes down.

  16. I love the cover. It screams summer! I would totally take it to the beach and read it as the sun goes down. I love how the models have a smirky smile on their face, like they’ve all got something in their minds, ‘I know something you don’t know’, makes me wonder if that’s something that they asked the models to do and it has something to do with the book, or if it’s purely accidental. Either way, would love to read it :)

  17. Mya says:

Really cute cover. I agree with the fact that the models look stupendous, and I especially like the glare of the golden sun. And the wisps of hair of the model catching the sun look surreal! =D
My favorite thing though is its simplicity. The models aren’t really in your face, and there’s no photoshopped skies or anything. The blank white is such a great concept for making the title pop! So pretty!

  18. Reyna says:

I think that it is so neat that you got to choose who you wanted on your cover! I love how beachy the cover is, and how it looks so “fresh.” I love it when books have the look like yours does..fresh and clean! I also think that its cool how you put together a story board and how you shared it with us!

  19. Diana Dang says:

I think it’s a really pretty cover but I just wish the sun didn’t kill off one of the male model’s face so much, haha.

  20. Happy Release week, Melissa!! :)
Love summer covers. :) Definitely beachy.

  21. MJ says:

  23. Tiff says:

What Diana Dang said. I don’t love the sun that literally covers one of the boys–I hope that’s the boy that the girl she doesn’t choose, because…that would suck. I feel like I’m a little blinded by the cover.
I do like the girl model, and I think she’s perfectly summery. I LOVE her mood board!

  24. Hillary says:

The girl on the cover is so pretty. And I kinda like how the light is covering one of the boys. It seems like a very summery and beach-y book.

  25. The cover totally says summer. I love the glare of the sun! It’s very authentic.

  26. Miss Erin says:

I LOVE the lighting and the fonts. It’s sooo pretty.

  27. Ann says:

I love how the sun is right behind them. Totally summer.

  28. Nikki U. says:

Not only does it scream summer at me, it makes me want to go to the beach! Only one more week of school then it is time for some vacation. Can’t wait to see the sand, the waves, and hopefully some boys as good- looking as the ones on the cover.

  29. Jana says:

Totally says summer! What’s interesting to me is everything else it says. There’s a threesome, with one boy in the forefront, dominating, prominent; then there’s the one in the rear, practically obscured by the environment… what’s his story? Is he secretly admiring, longing, filled with unrequited love? Or is he scheming, plotting, full of envy. Does he provide some kind of inspiration or salvation–he looks sort of ethereal–or even protection? The cover makes me very curious.

  30. Paradox says:

It definitely says summer! It’s radiant, and everything seems tinged by warmth and the glow of carefree days!

  31. Chrissie says:

Definitely summery… and I love the lighting, it’s so pretty and not something you see very often. Also, I love the title and how involved she got to be in the cover as the author!
    -Chrissie

  35. Release Week Cover Stories: Story of a Girl by Sara Zarr

Welcome to the fifth and final post of my Release Week Cover Stories extravaganza! (Lovestruck Summer was officially released on Tuesday!) I use the word extravaganza because each day, as I interview a new author about their cover, I…

  36. Angie says:

The cover definitely has summer vibes. The way that the sun is shining behind them is perfection :]

  37. Mrs. V says:

What a fun group of books to feature this week. I am going to have to add all of them to my Amazon wish list!

  38. Amanda says:

Yay! It’s Effy from Skins :)
The cover is gorgeous. I am one of those people that is always attracted to spots of sunlight, and beautiful sunrises/sunsets. In fact, my desktop photo is one of a sunrise that I took once on holiday.
I have no idea what the book is about, but it sounds like a summer romance, which is exactly what I could do with right now.
Congrats on your release too, Melissa. It’s on my TBR list :)

  39. Mona says:

i love the cover..and looks like a nice
book to read during the summer!

  40. Nancy says:

I love the simplicity of this cover…very clean, somehow.

  41. WingedSkye says:

I love how the sunset catches the girl, almost fading out her face, only not. I see the guy hidden behind her, and wonder who he is, and why she’s with the other guy in front. It makes me start thinking up possibilities, (he’s her ex-boyfriend, he’s the guy-next-door/her former best friend who’s in love with her) because he doesn’t look happy that she’s not with him. I love how the little piece of her hair has flown up, caught the sunlight, and looks like fire against her boyfriend’s throat. The way her boyfriend is looking at the cover, with only half of his face, and his smug-ish smile makes me wonder what he’s up to. (using her, cheating, glad that he has her, and the other guy doesn’t) It’s a cover that makes you start wondering…
    WingedSkye

  42. Sarah says:

I love the freckles on the model….freckles are awesome!
Sounds like a great summer read. :)

  43. Avery says:

The sun and the white sky background definitely scream summer and the beach. That’s really cool how she got to pick the models. If I were the author I feel like I’d really want to be involved in every step of the process like that. Very cool.

  44. Carlene says:

I love the sun shining across the faces of the three young people. I think she did a great job choosing the models. This one makes me think of when I was younger.
    Thanks
    Carlene

  45. This cover is SO gorgeous! Yes, it definitely says ‘summer’ to me :-) I love it!

  46. Chelsea says:

That is amazing, being able to pick your cover. I think it is gorgeous.
I’m one of those people where, to read a book, I have to either read an amazing description or it has to have an amazing cover (It’s terrible, I know, but true)
and this book cover is definitely something I would do a double take at. It’s perfect =)

  47. Ellie says:

It must be great to have so much input.
It totally looks like summer, right at the end, when it’s starting to get cooler.

  48. Abby says:

  49. Genevieve says:

This cover does scream ‘summer!’. It is very cute and I want to know the characters.

  50. Abby says:

The cover is gorgeous and so beachy. Simple and sweet, it gets the point across. The book looks good too. I’ve never read anything by her….

  51. Lizie says:

I love this cover. I feel like without even knowing what her book is about, this cover and the title of the book scream it for you, in a good way.
    Screams summer too :)

  52. Erica says:

This cover definitely says summmer to me, the best moments of summer at that. I immediately wonder who the two guys are…is it a love triangle, or something completely opposite? It gets me wondering and asking questions right away which is exactly what covers are supposed to do :o)

  53. Alexandria says:

I love the how the sun is blurring the one guy in the background. It makes you think she gets with the other but then you can’t know until you read the book. I also love how it reminds you of summer. Overall it is very pretty.

  54. Pam says:

The light is perfect! I live near the beach so I can say with some degree of authority that the cover screams summer. The use of the sunlight to distort one image really makes you wonder too.

  55. Jacqueline says:

Oh yes, it definitely says summer to me. I love it. It brings to mind those movies where a mother or grandmother is telling their kid or grandkid about a certain summer in their youth…I can hear the narration now…”It was the summer of *insert year*…” :D

  56. Alexa says:

It’s lovely and definitely says summer to me, makes me want to head to the beach. I like how both boys faces are partially obscured and the girl is the centre. It’s very interesting.

no. the cover doesn’t just say summer. it screams it!
    l-o-v-e it baby!
