In looking beyond teen publications to feature your book, don’t forget the women’s market, which serves as the big sister (Glamour) or mother (Family Circle) to your teenage audience.
I wrote about glamour.com’s lovely write-up of Violet on the Runway, and now Family Circle Books of the Month features a review for November!
Speaking of books and marketing, what’s the last book you bought partially because you saw it everywhere? And did you like it?
PS-Dontcha love FC’s clean covers that go to subscribers? Newsstand copies are still filled with coverlines, but that’s how magazines sell…

One would be Middlesex, by Jeffrey Euginedes. A friend was telling me that I HAD to read it, and when I saw it in a ton of places, I was like, “Okay, okay, FINE.” And I absolutely adored it. There’s a reason it’s popular: it’s so freaking AMAZING.
I also have seen Stephen Colbert’s book everywhere and recently read it — but I had every intention of reading it anyway.
Yes, Middlesex is SO GOOD. And now that Oprah’s on it… the world will know!
How do you know who to send the ARC’s too at these magazines? Curious minds…
Good question, Alyssa! Mastheads are great. I knew about this online feature, so the online editor was a natural choice. Study the market, know what section they cover books in, and study the masthead. Then include a note with your ARC that says, “My book might be perfect for FC’s Teen Book of the Month.” (You do the thinking for them so they can just slip your book into place.)
