Melissa Walker

First, I just really have to say that Keri Russell had my favorite look last night at the Oscars. This photo doesn’t really do it justice–the color and fabric looked more vivid on TV. And no, the dripping-with-sparkle necklace didn’t hurt, but I really do love the simplicity of her Nina Ricci gown. Pretty! So who do you think had the best red carpet style?

Glamour girls aside, I have a few questions for anyone who reads my blog. One reader, we’ll call her “M,” actually wrote a paper for English class about this blog! Yay! So flattering. She was mostly positive, but she did bring up some interesting, possibly negative points, and gave me permission to quote her on one:
M wrote: “Her audience is not feeling as connected to Melissa as some of the other author blogs. Other authors discuss their lives.”
My question: Do you guys really want to hear more about my life? M is right–I don’t write much about the day to day, but mainly that’s because I’m not sure you’d care about the chronicles of heating up a Weight Watchers meal for lunch and then working on a story for Glamour before watching a little Oprah. So tell me: Would you like to know more? Do you think I’m an impersonal blogger? Do your favorite bloggers really let you into their lives?
Let me know–I’m truly curious. I really do adore it when you guys post comments (the current contest to show links has been so much fun–I love all the things you’ve sent that I never would have seen otherwise!).
And thanks to M for making me really think about what I’m blogging!

I think your blog is great, especially the fact that you reply to comments and such. In my opinion, talking more about your life would be interesting, because we can get an insight into places we’ve never been, and things we’ve never seen or experienced. I love hearing about total stranger’s lives for some reason… I guess I’m just weird. :-)

Haha I loveeeee hearing about people’s lives. To tell you the truth, I somewhat love personal blogs more than fashion blogs (except for a few outstanding fashion blogs) because if written well, they can reveal so much about a person. It’s fascinating.

I do like hearing a little more about bloggers’ personal lives, but mostly their opinions on things that everyone seems to be talking about. Usually when bloggers start talking about totally random things I get turned off, but otherwise it’s all good. Like Sarah Dessen’s LJ, for example, is pretty much always a good read. Justine Larbalestier’s blog is pretty entertaining as well. But I visit all sorts of authors’ blogs, so it’s whatever take you want, I think.

  4. I thought you were posting about your glamorous life! You keep me hooked up with great marketing tips and chit-chat on pop-culture. But how exciting to be the topic of an English paper!! I guess you’ve officially made it. ;)

At first, I thought the blog would be more about your personal life, but it isn’t bad the way it is, just a little.. impersonal. The day-to-day things we do in life, though, are what made us special. Without them, we wouldn’t be who we were. And it’s always fun to learn about all the glamorous things our favorite authors and such get up. Even if it really isn’t all that glamorous. (8

  6. I struggle with this issue too. In other words, how much of “me” to put in my blog? I tend to stay focussed on the writing aspects of my life. But maybe it would be more interesting for readers to hear about other things too. It’s a delicate balance.
Although, i must say your blog looks just great.
(the best moment, i thought, in the whole oscars night was glen hansard and marketa iglova singing “falling slowly”…i just love that song, that movie, and that couple!)

Hi Melissa, Chiming in late to say I’d love to hear more about your life. I’m on WW, Love Oprah and am really interested in writing for magazines so it all sounds good to me.
I think that’s kind of what the blogs are all about. So do tell!
And I agree Kerri was just beautiful on the red carpet.
Thanks so much for your support on my blog it is so appreciated.

Hmmm. A good question. I find that the comments that get the most posts on my own blog are the ones that people can relate to. But in the long run, I think it’s just how it’s presented. The biggest turnoff is when authors only want to talk publicity. My favorite author blogs are the ones where they allow themselves to shine through. I also like it when they discuss writing, but that’s probably because I like to write, too, and who doesn’t want to read about shared interests? In the long run, I suppose that it depends on who your intended audience is. But above all, have fun with your topics, your writing. (Take it from someone who has gotten way too uptight about it from time to time and ended up burning out on it for a good long time.) Anyway, I know this is an older post, but I saw it and just had to respond.

I’m posting late on this one – I really enjoy your blog because most of your entries are short and sweet. I like your contests and industry insight. And I like that it’s not 12 paragraphs long! I think if you feel comfortable talking more about your daily life, then you should. Otherwise, don’t worry about it. :)
