Author Appearance Information
I enjoy speaking to school and library groups, as well as book clubs! I've been an editor at ROSIE, ELLEgirl and Seventeen magazines, and I've written for many other publications. See some of my work here. I love to talk about the journalism world, the fashion industry, and the ups and downs of being an author. Below are a few of my favorite presentations, good for grades 7-12 (and adults!).
Joint Visit with Model Selena Breed
Fun for large or small groups, Lancome spokesmodel Selena Breed and I present together, talking about the realities of the fashion world and all its glamorous and dark aspects, as well as sharing our personal stories about becoming a model and a writer, respectively. This presentation involves a lot of audience participation--we both love to let the students lead the discussion and have talked about many topics, including lack of diversity in the fashion world, the physical and emotional pressures of modeling, and the Devil-Wears-Prada aspects of magazine work.
Writing is Totally a Real Career: How I Became a Magazine Editor and Author
Ideal for larger groups, this topic includes lots of audience interaction. After giving a 30-minute talk about my path to becoming a magazine editor and then an author, as well as the stories behind my books, I will open the floor for Q & A.
Breaking into Magazines
For smaller groups, I can talk about how to start writing for magazines (yes, even as a teenager!). The talk focuses on the key aspects breaking in: having a good story to tell, presenting it in a professional pitch letter, and really knowing the magazine to approach. I will also discuss different story ideas with the group, and give techniques for finding unique ideas and the perfect angle for an article.
I'm Virtually There!
Can't fly me across the country? I'd still love to visit and talk to your class or book club. I offer chat or instant message sessions with schools and libraries. Video chatting is also available for those with computer access and a Web camera.
Thinking of something else? I'm pretty flexible, so run it by me.
The Nitty Gritty
I can get around pretty easily in the NYC area. If beyond-local travel is involved, however, I'll need expenses paid.
I can do three presentations in a day, plus I'll autograph as many books as you like!
My fee is negotiable depending on location and the budget you have to work with, so to discuss, please email.
