The Library-Loving Blog Challenge!
This is a library-loving blog challenge!
For every commenter on this post between now and 3/26 at midnight, I will donate one book to my local library: The Brooklyn Public Library, up to 50 books. (Yes, this kind of scares me but I'm ready to do it!)
How easy could it be? You comment, I cough up the books, the library gets a gift! If you don't know what to say in your comment, "I love libraries" will do.
I asked my friend and librarian Marie Hansen why she loves libraries so much, and she said, "I love libraries because they are full of FREE books! Free books is an amazing concept!"
YES!
Note that my pledge is "per commenter"--so if a single person leaves 50 comments, that still only counts once! But you can do more by spreading the word ... please link to this post, tweet about it, and send your friends here so they can comment and raise more donations.
If you're moved to make a flat-fee donation to your library, or to start your own challenge, bring it on!, and please leave that information in the comments.
For a complete list of participating bloggers (and to visit other sites where you can help libraries just by leaving a comment!) visit the writerjenn blog.
Happy Tuesday!
*UPDATE* Since 50 was too low a bar (thanks, everyone!), I'll now donate 50 books for the first 50 commenters plus $1 for each additional comment through Friday 3/26 at midnight, up to $100 (so 150 comments = 50 new books + $100 for the Brooklyn Public Library). Yay!

Most of we book-types remember childhood libraries, hiding in the stacks, arm loads checked out every week over the summer. The books we learned on came from someone: a donation, a bequest, tax money spent. Good to see you passing along the love.

Hi library-loving blogger! I wish my library was bigger so it could hold more books!
Here is my challenge:

Posted by Taffy | March 23, 2010 6:20 PM
I love this! I'd join in, but I just donated a box of books to my library. Regardless, I love libraries! Why? Like you said, FREE books! Or, in my case right now, FREE Freaks and Geeks DVDs! (I'm definitely re-watching the show).
As someone who's getting their masters in library sciences right now, i've been pretty bummed with the whole library funding situation (in Florida, they're planning to get rid of all state and federal library funding). Stuff like this, though, makes me extremely happy. :)

I love libraries more than you could ever know. My public library is my haven. It is possibly the only place I can EVER get work done. I hate that not enough young people like myself (I'm 16) cherish the library and the knowledge it holds. I LOVE LIBRARIES (: Oh, and you too Melissa!

What a great challenge to your readers, Melissa! We have really loved our neighborhood library with its separate dedicated "kids room," and I'm looking forward to getting reacquainted with the Chapel Hill Public Library very soon! I'm so happy to be raising two kids who love nothing better than snuggling up on the couch with a good book. :)

This is such a cool idea, and a great concept to take up. I think that more people should definitely take this up, and help out the libraries. Especially those that can't usually afford all the newest books. Thanks for helping Melissa.

Thanks for doing the library challenge. I am impressed with how many people are participating. Libraries need our help now more than ever, with this tough economic climate, and all of the budget cuts. Like you, I love libraries because I always think to myself, "All of these books, for free?!" It's great how you're donating books instead of money. You are very generous and thoughtful!
Posted by Christine Woodcock | March 24, 2010 3:30 PM
Thank you!! Our libraries are needed now more than ever - and NYC libraries are looking at devastating cuts. If only the mayor knew how truly important we are in brooklyn's communities...Thank you!

Thanks, everyone! Thus ends the challenge, and though I'm technically up for 50 books and $41 by this comment count, I'll go ahead and do 50 books and $150. Libraries have given me way more than that over the years.
Thanks again for joining in the challenge by commenting!
