Win-It Wednesday: Hold Still by Nina LaCour
The winner of How to Steal a Car by Pete Hautman is... Esther! Send me your address, E. Thanks to everyone for telling me about all the gifts--I love hearing about other people's hauls and present ideas.
This Win-It Wednesday is going to stretch out over two weeks, because I'm going to Brazil next week (Rio Fashion Week!! Eeee!) and I won't be around to blog much. But trust me, this book is worth waiting for two weeks. Nina LaCour's Hold Still is one of the most realistic books about dealing with a friend's suicide that's ever been written. Okay, that I've read at least. I just adore, adore, adore her writing and her characterizations -- they ring so true!
Here are some reviews from out there in the blogosphere: S. Krishna's Books, Reading Rants! and Frenetic Reader.
To enter, comment below and make up a crazy writing prompt for me. I just found out that Aimee Bender's website has an awesome writing exercise each month (so cool! This month's is: "One page that contains a broken gadget of some sort and a dancer."). I'm starting a new book soon, so I need to be playing around a bit!
Thanks! I'll pick a winner at random on Weds, 1/20.
PS-Don't forget the readergirlz chat TONIGHT at 6pm PST/9pm EST with Beth Kephart! And the next author in residence will be Elizabeth Scott, who's asking for vlog suggestions now (go give her ideas and you'll be entered to win books!).

Rio Fashion Week? Is there another Violet book on the way (I hope!)?
The writing prompt that I'm still stuck on involves minute description and scene setting - I find that I tend to race towards the finish line of a story. So, to slow it down, how about writing one or two pages about a tape dispenser? Where is it? Why is it important to the story? Who is in the room with it (if anyone)?
Enjoy.

You fall asleep as an adult and wake up in a 7th grade science classroom. In one hand you hold a jar of peanut butter and in the other a judge's gavel. The teacher says to you - "explain how these two things are like DNA".

A camping trip, a group of kids, a boy and girl wander off who don't get along at the beginning but then as they spend more time together-and some dangerous situations- they find out they can't believe they have lived this long without each other... *sigh* so romantic.. :)

Your best friend comes to you in tears, but she won't talk. She's more scared than you've ever seen her. What happens next?
I checked out HOLD STILL from the library and was so bummed when I had to return it! Little Willow also recommended it.

You wake up because someone is screaming in the street outside. For some reason even when you turn on the light you still can't see but you can smell something really, really nasty.
(and I think I'm going to try the idea about the tape dispenser!)

It's the 4th of July parade in a small town. This parade is a big deal for them and so the whole town is decked out in their Sunday best and nearly a ton of potatoe salad sitting in everyones stomach when suddenly ninjas attack and steal their prized apple pie. The whole story is the towns people stealing the pie back from the ninjas.
