Release Week Prize: Friday 5
In an ode to the fabulous Sarah Dessen's "Friday Five," here is your fifth prize (on a Friday!).
It's actually a surprise prize for me, because last night at my reading, my new friend Jessica (who is at, like, every reading in NYC, which rules) gifted me a signed copy of The Plain Janes by Cecil Castellucci (Author), Jim Rugg (Illustrator). It's a graphic novel, and I read it in one go last night--L.O.V.E. It's art and angst and popularity and geekiness and the limits placed on self-expression. You need this book.
And it can be yours!
So, here are some other cool places where either Violet or I have shown up this week. Comment away and then come back and tell me to enter you for the number of comments you left (you don't have to visit these sites if you don't want to--though they are pretty great sites if you have time to click around--you can also just comment below, which is good for one entry).
My Teen Fiction Cafe post about the release day dress!
The Compulsive Reader's Book of the Month (drumroll... VIP!)
Harmony Book Reviews' Violet by Design review
YA New York's announcement for VIP
Teen Book Review's Review of VIP
A full series review by Lenore (cool idea!)
Sick of me yet? Don't answer that!
I'd also love to hear if you guys read graphic novels. I don't usually, for no real reason, but this one was so good, I am going to have to take another look at a bunch of them! If you do read them, which ones are especially awesome?
Thanks, and Happy Friday!
PS-Oh, and remember that you still have time to enter every contest from last week... just click below! Monday's winner will be announced, you know, on Monday. And so on...
PPS-I forgot glitter letters yesterday, which was so lame of me! I don't use them often, but release week needs glitter. Sorry!

I can't go to any of the websites at the moment, but I do read some graphic novels, (the majority are the NBC show Heroes GN's that they put up on the website).
P.S. If you do go to Chapel Hill, I may be able to make it depending on the day, time, etc; it is a four hour drive from my house.

I don't read a lot of graphic novels. However I have read a few, but only when they are additions to series. Michelle Jaffe recently published one that is a minnie Bad Kitty mystery and I absolutely loved it! I am also looking forward to reading Shannon Hale's first graphic novel, Rapunzel's Revenge.

P.S. I'm finally going to the bookstore today and I am definitley buying myself a copy of Violet on the Runway.

I adore graphic novels! Especially Japanese ones! I have over a 100 in my collection. xD; They are the reason why I hardly read any real novels...

Oh dear lord, I'm in love with so many series. I read surely over a couple hundred of different series. I have to say my favourite is MeruPuri by Hino Matsuri and Vampire Doll by Erika Kari. =)

I'm more of a horror and mystery graphic novel fan then anything (Steve Niles!), but a couple I've liked that would probably tickle your interest:
Optic Nerve by Adrian Tomine
La Perdida by Jessica Abel
the Love & Rockets books by Los Bros Hernandez

I heart graphic novels. I love Plain Janes, I need to get the sequel! Optic Nerve is great, as mentioned Adrian Tomine is my favorite along with Daniel Clowes. For Clowes I'd start with Ghost World (the graphic novel or the movie) they are both fantastic, and a little bit different. Persepolis is good, so is Blankets. I just recently read the Heartbreak Diet which is good for someone just starting out with graphic novels. I also like Tales of Woodsman Pete. I could go on and on and on. I read more independent comics/graphic novels not really a fan of superhero comics. Sin City is fun though. Can't wait to hear what you pick up. There have got to be some good comic book stores in New York. I'm sure they'd have some great suggestions for you as well!
PS I bought Death By Bikini today, it is a little book, but it's so very cute!

Graphic Novels, Manga
I swear must be my middle name. I've read tons, and you can read em online.
Usually I swing my onemanga.com to read them... or I download loads of volumes from onemanga.com
My favorite hands down is SKIP BEAT! Its hysterically funny. Trust me, you'll be dying of laughter, it doesn't start out hysterical and when I read the first book I thought, 'Hmmm.... it is interesting...' but by the second I was hooked. Kyoko is just... INSANE.
Summary:Kyoko Mogami followed her true love Sho to Tokyo to support him while he made it big as an idol. But he's casting her out now that he's famous! Kyoko won't suffer in silence--she's going to get her sweet revenge by beating Sho in show biz!
THE WALLFLOWER is also hysterically funny and right off the bat.
Summary:It's a gorgeous, spacious mansion, and four handsome, fifteen-year-old friends are allowed to live in it for free! There's only one condition-that within three years the guys must transform the owner's wallflower niece into a lady befitting the palace in which they all live! How hard can it be?
Enter Sunako Nakahara, the agoraphobic, horror-movie-loving, pockmark-faced, frizzy-haired, fashion-illiterate recluse who tends to break into explosive nosebleeds whenever she sees anyone attractive. This project is going to take more than our four heroes ever expected: it needs a miracle!
MeruPuri is cute, by the same author of Vampire Knight, which I'm reading now [it isn't finished yet]. I recommend both. Paradise Kiss is AMAZING, another series by her is Nana. I haven't read it yet, but my friend has and loves it.
But it really depends on what you like... do you care if its finished yet. Do you like happy romances, high school, drama, mecha [like gundam and machines, such and such], Comedy... happy endings, mystery.
So you let me know... as you can tell... I went a little overboard...

I left three comments on your links for today. I stayed away from some of the reviews for now because I definately want to read the books and don't want to accidently spoil parts like I did yesterday with some of the reviews.
I have never read any graphic novels. I bought some for my classroom library, and my students love them. I have read parts with them but never the full book. One of their favorites is the Bone series, but most of my Bone books disappeared this year. My one complaint with them is that for some reason they always fall apart. There were always pages coming out for some reason. I ended up giving away my last two Bone copies to some of my students at the end of the year because of I was tired of taping in sections of pages that kept on falling out:).
I saw a few posts for a Rapunzel (spelling?) graphic novel on a few sites that looked like it would be great.

I can't believe my crazy hotel in Boston didn't have internet and I missed all the fun release time goodness.....Congratulations, though! :)

I don't read very many graphic novels. Although I did love the one Meg Cabot did....The Avalon High Series.

I don't have time to go to any of the sites, I'm sorry...
I don't usually read graphic novels, but all my friends do. I always wonder if I would like them if I picked them up. But I think I read too fast and would go through them too quickly. I think they're an expensive habit too.
Congrats on the book release!

I adore graphic novels, having been introduced to comic world of late. I did really enjoy Ghost World but I am probably leaning towards trades more than anything, especially Catwoman - the strong, wiley, beautiful, confident, intelligent, sexy Selena Kyle.

Thanks for linking to me! I commented on all your links and I really want to win this graphic novel - it looks like so much fun!
