Win-It Wednesday: Love and Other Four Letter Words (signed!)
It was so much fun to read about what you'd write about for Red. I hope some of you guys are inspired to get the book (paperback comes out in October), and to write some of your own stories! Last week's winner of the beyond inspiring, multi-autographed copy of Red: The Book is... Ames! She'd write her Red essay about "the compassion i share with my brothers (and about how they are also mean)." Send me your address, A!
This week, I'm giving away a signed copy of Carolyn Mackler's Love and Other Four Letter Words. This is the Printz-honor-winning author's debut novel, and it's the completely charming story of Sammie Davis, who is forced to deal with tons of change after her parents separate and her mom moves her to New York City. Sammie's voice makes this book--Carolyn is a master of characters you wanna be friends with, I think. I did a reading with Carolyn in June and she actually pulled out her old diary and read juicy parts. It was amazingly brave. I could never!
Anyway, to enter, comment below (bonus entry if you spread the word about the contest through myspace or facebook or your blog or any which way). In the comments, I want to hear about your favorite independent bookstore. Meaning, not B&N or Borders, but the local bookstore you go to for a more... intimate experience. What's it called? Where is it? What does it look like? And if you don't shop at an independent bookstore, just comment telling me that, and then see if you can find one in or near your town. They're like secret treasures, especially when you get to know some of the employees who can recommend great reads for you when they know your taste.
Mine is The Community Bookstore, and I just bought John Green's Looking for Alaska and ordered a bunch of other books! If they don't have the one you want, they'll always get it for you quickly. Yay!
Happy Wednesday!
PS-Wish Tasha a Happy 16th Birthday and win books! Double bonus.
PPS-This is me being insanely unorganized, but I know I promised to guest blog for a few people around the release of VIP (Side note: Isn't it cool that Violet in Private has that acronym?). I can't remember all my guest blog engagements! If I promised you a guest blog, remind me! Thank you!

There aren't many good independent bookstores near where I live but I have few favorites that I visit when traveling:
Malaprop's in Asheville, NC
http://www.malaprops.com/
Dee Gee's in Morehead City, NC
Two Sisters Bookery in Wilmington, NC
Also, I loved the Intimate Bookshops in NC & was really sad when they closed : (

whoohoo! first comment!! :D
well....i dont really shop at any independent bookstores, mostly because there arent really any where i live. i mean, there's this small Borders (really Borders Express) that i go to a lot, and the people there are pretty cool, but that's about as personal as they get. usually i dont care how they treat me (as long as they're still nice) because i usually go in, get what i want and then leave. or other times i browse. i'm not one who usually asks for help in bookstores...

Myopic - by far. Its a tiny little building but they've got stacks, literally, stacks of looks EVERYWHERE. They somehow managed to squeeze three levels + the basement too and they've got a guard cat who watches you. If I didn't love cats so much I'd say it was creepy as hell.
That's my favorite bookstore.
Oh! And I forgot to say, they sell them cheap - which is the greatest thing ever, especially for a broke college student. :D

I never go to independent bookstores. I think there's one in my town, but I'm pretty sure they don't sell YA. I've never been to it.

Independent bookstores...hmmm...actually, I dont think there are any independent bookstores where I live. I know there's a couple in Garden Grove, but thats kinda far and those books are all Korean and not YA...

Me, me, me! YA New York. About a book you liked growing up. Any book! I don't have anyone for this coming Monday ... hint, hint ... but I'd love a guest blog from you on ANY day at all. E-mail or call me, yah?
much love!

I don't know any independent book stores around where I live but I definitely will have to go looking for one.

I'm going to answer but not enter since I just won!
I love love bookstores of all kinds. The best independents aren't around the block like Borders though! Doesn't mean I don't have favorites though! I love the Book Alcove in Maryland. It is packed with book all for a very cheap price. I go there at least once every time I visit my grandparents. Closer by we have a bookstore called Sixth Chamber Books, they are a newer favorite! When I go on vacation I love to go into independent bookstores, they are one of a kind! When I was in college I went to a little bookstore called Bookends. I tried to work there but they were NEVER hiring. I could always go in and get ARC's by donating money to charity! (since you aren't allowed to sell them) Great question!

I normally go to Barnes and Noble since it's closest and since there are really no independent stores near me. Well there are, but none with YA books.
There is one about 45 minutes away that does some events that I go to. I like it, but it's too far away.

There's this little bookstore called "Books Books Books" or something along those lines at the local mall. I love going there because finding a book there is really like looking for treasure. They sell books for a discounted price and have a lot of used books on sale. I usually try finding good reads there before going to the local Chapters-Indigo branch.
Well, please enter me in the contest. Thanks. =)

Well, there was one in my mall that I would visit every Saturday, until it closed. I had made friends with ALL of the booksellers, and was planning on getting a job there... :-( My absolute Favorite bookperson would let me "borrow" certain books and return them without paying, and she knew my taste. Anyway, when it closed I was devastated, and had to use the local Books-A-Million for years. Then, I went to Seneca (a town about 25 minutes away from mine) and found a little store called the Booksmith. I went in because I can NEVER pass up a bookstore, and lo and behold, my favorite bookperson is working behind the counter! We both did a little dance, she recommended a few books, then bought me one as a gift. Now I sometimes take random trips there just to go to the bookstore.
P.S. I'm on chapter 10 of my mysteriously sent copy of Violet on the Runway, and I LOVE it!

Where I live now there is only one bookstore and that is Borders, but where I used to live there was this tiny used bookstore that I loved; I think it was called Roswell's Used Bookstore, but I'm not entirely sure.
I blogged about this over on my book review site.

I LOVE independent book stores, sadly over here in NZ the good ones are too far from where I live!

I have a fav independent bookstore that's not in my hometown (although I do LOVE the independent bookstore in my town). My favorite is a little store called "Books to Be Red" on Ocracoke Island in North Carolina. They have a great selection of books, jewelry, artwork and pottery. And even though they are a small store, they still had a midnight release party for Harry Potter last summer so that the kids on vacation wouldn't have to miss out on a midnight party!

I go to BookPeople in Austin, which is a fabulous store - although you couldn't really call it an intimate setting! It's larger than many chain bookstores.
I love this book - I didn't really like Guyaholic though.

It really, really sucks but there are NO independent book stores near me. There was one a while ago but it was relatively small (and didn't sell many teen books) and soon shut now.

There is one independent bookstore in my town but it doesn't have much. Most of the books are used and neither they or the new ones are very interesting :( There is also another one but it sells more greeting cards than books.

Saddly I live in Japan, so although they have book stores, the english section is tiny...but I go to a place called: Maruzen. It is just a small place where people go, and they can sit and read...its just 1 florr, so theres not much...but hey? its better than nothing.

All the ones around me sell used books that smell like mold. I like my books new...I'm kinda a book snob like that.

I usually just by books at Amazon but there is a book store which is really popular in Israel called Stimatzky סטמצקי

I honestly haven`t found any good independent bookstores where I live. I`ll have to look more when I get back home but for now I guess i have to stick with Chapters.

I have yet to find a great independent bookstore in Philly where I recently moved :-( Though the city does have a wonderful library that hosts tons of great author events, which it even audiotapes and has available for check out in case you can't be there live. When I lived in Washington, DC for 7 years I adored Politics and Prose, one of the best independent bookstore, large and quirky with tons of books, strong coffee, and many great author events.

I don't really have any. I can count on one hand how many times I've been to an independent book store. :( I think the closet thing for me would be the library. =P
