Marketing Monday: Vlogs
What do you guys think of vlogs vs. blogs? I kind of like seeing people on video, but I've always been a little bit scared of it personally. (Side note: That picture at left is one that turns up when you google image "vlog"--seriously.)
That said, I overcame my fear to do a vlog for YA New York, so go watch it if you have three minutes and fourteen seconds. And, um, tell me what you think.
But remember what your mom told you: If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. Although, full disclosure, my senior quote in high school was "If you can't say anything nice, come sit by me."
(Yeah, bit of a gossip habit, but that's all in the past.)
My vlogging inspiration? The lovely and vlogging Jessica Burkhart, who has some great vlogs on her blog about getting her book deal and the first year in the life of a debut author.
Anyway, Happy Monday, and do let me know if you have an opinion on vlogging vs. blogging.

Like the vlog. Is that a TBR pile behind you that extends as high as your closet?? I'm jealous.

Not sure I'd like to purposely put myself on video. I don't even like to listen to myself on the phone-answer machine. Not sure how I'd feel about listening to and watching myself on screen.

I may be biased, dearest Melissa, but I for one thought it was lovely. Thank you!

I think your vlog was great! It was just to right amount of time. I can't sit through 10 minute videos but like 1 minute is just too short. It was perfect!

Again, great vlog. Perfect length, cool background and you kept my interest. Thanks so much for the sweet shout out!
I finally got you added to my sidebar, btw. For some reason, I thought your blog was already there....

That was a lot of fun! And a great choice on your part: a "guilty read" type book is a perfect choice for a vlog, since they have that confessional look/feel to them.
And now let me magically transform into a curmudgeon and dis (one s?) the medium. Random trivia: I once read that, on average, 30 minutes of televised news contains less information than a single page of a newspaper. Even the best vlogs don't contain much more than a main statement and a handful of supporting anecdotes/asides.
Vlogs aren't bad, they're just content-light. And that's not bad except that, you know, everything is content-light now. People are busy so things are presented to them in ways that are easy and requires little thought.
And that leads to things like the housing crisis, where people skip over the pages about "adjustable rates" and just get to the part where they sign and get a shiny new house. Then the rates go up and the shiny new house gets taken away. (What? There wasn't anything about that on the signature line?!)
But this has very little to do with your vlog (I can't believe you took away those people's houses Melissa!), which was great, or with the fact that I am really sort of tempted to buy a video camera and make my own. Because I like vlogs, they're fun. I'm just saying.

It was great! I would watch if you did vloging all the time, but I think I prefer regular blogging. Btw, I wanna read that book, even though I already know most of the things about it. (stupid spoiling friends!)

I loved you v-log. I've never read Flowers In the Attic but i so want to read it now and I want and old copy with the holes! I'm now brave enough to do one myself. I hate my voice. Yech! But you were lovely.

Loved your vlog (...and Flowers in the Attic)! I think you just inspired me to do one on my own blog.

That was a super awesome vlog! I think vlogs are a scary too, but you handled it really well! I really want to read Flowers in the Attic now too. I also really like the way you talked- it totally kept me interested, and it felt really casual. =D

Btw, I also thought you voice sounded a tad like Cameron Diaz's. Lol, or I might be imagining it! =D
