Win-It Wednesday: SKIN
This is a double-win day, and I'm sorry I'm late posting!
First, the winner of a signed copy of Violet on the Runway, per Linda Gerber's Death By Bikini release week extravaganza, is... Reader Rabbit!! Send me your address, RR.
And the winner of the swooningly great Boy Meets Boy is... Hillary! You are going to love this book, H, so send me your address.
Today's contest is for a copy of Skin by Adrienne Maria Vrettos. It's the deeply moving story of a family watching their daughter waste away while she suffers from anorexia, told through the eyes of a funny, confused and misunderstood younger brother who is unseen and unheard in his world. You will be into it, I promise.
For a chance to win the book, just comment below and tell me what one or two of your all-time top book titles are. I don't mean the contents, I mean the titles. A current favorite of mine (which I haven't had a chance to read yet!) is Someday This Pain Will be Useful to You by Peter Cameron. How fabulous is that title?! So what are some of your favorites?

I'm so jealous of that title (Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You) - it's got a Miranda July ring, no?

I just finished Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You - good use of that quote.
I like most of John Marsden's titles: Tomorrow When the War Began, The Dead of Night, A Killing Frost, etc. They're straightforward but can be interpreted in other ways.
When I was a kid I really liked Mary Downing Hawn's The Gentleman Outlaw and Me, Eli: A Story of the Old West. I first picked her books up because of the titles and discovered a great author.

There is this book where the author photographs toy chickens called "Bitter with Baggage Seeks Same". I had to buy that!
And I like Lemony Snickett's titles - esp. "The Penultimate Peril".

Justine Larbalestier's new book (to be released in September) is called How to Ditch Your Fairy. How awesome does that sound?

The two best titles (I hesitate to call the one my 'favorite') are probably:
We Regret To Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed with Our Families: Stories from Rwanda
and
Wicked Lovely
not very similar for sure, but...
(though I'm also liking The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks)

I love the title, "How I Paid for College: A Novel of Sex, Theft, Friendship & Musical Theater" - the book looks great, thanks for the contest!

OOH love titles--
two faves:
'Scuse Me While I Kill This Guy
I'd Tell You I Love You But Then I'd Have to Kill You

Oh my god, I read that yesterday and completely fell into (sad, I must admit) love.
1. Hairstyles of the Damned
2. Rape, A Love Story (Joyce Carol Oates)

I don't tend to buy books strictly based on titles. One I did, however, was Girl 15, Charming but Insane by Sue Limb. Luckily the book lived up to its wit!

Starting in high school, I started reading Fawcett Gold Medal books when I could find them, and any other hardboiled book .. and yes, you often buy them because of the titles. Among my favorites:
Kitten With a Whip - Wade Miller
The Burnt Orange Heresy - Charles Willeford
After Dark, My Sweet - Jim Thompson
You'll Die Next! - Harry Whittington
-and-
Kill the Boss Goodbye - Peter Rabe
- Joe

You, Maybe- Rachel Vail (After you read the book, you understand why she says that. It cracked me up... I've used it a few times.)
Even God Is Single, So Stop Giving Me A Hard Time- Karen Salmansohn (Haha, I haven't read this, but I think I want to!!!)
=)

I absolutely positively love the title of Augusten Burrough's popular memoir
Running With Scissors
The title was actually what made me pick it up. I'm a big cover junkie, but this was one of the few times that I picked up a book because of the title and not the cover.
I also like the title of the book
Love (and Other Uses for Duct Tape)
It sounds soo cool :]

How to Disappear Completely and Never Be Found by Sara Nickerson is one of my personal favorites, title and content wise.
I especially love the little comics that are tucked in here and there. =)
Posted by Kelly | May 22, 2008 7:53 PM
-The Book Thief (besides the awesome title, it's also my fav contents wise)
Posted by NC | May 22, 2008 8:03 PM
I love the titles:
Queen of Babble and
TTYL
;)
Anyways, I couldn't find your email on the site so where should I send my address? xD

I love the "The Truth About Forever". Great title. :)

Hmm never thought of fave titles, I like that you're making me think...i'd have to go with -
Pretty Little Liars (by Sara Shepard) - it just sounds like a scandalous title, something full of drama and mystery (which it is).
and
A Great and Terrible Beauty (by Libba Bray) - as you can see i've found I love titles that are pretty and scary/ugly at the same time.
I also like Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr and the titles for the Uglies series they are simple but still draw you in.
Awesome contest!
