Win-It Wednesday: Shannon Hale's Book of a Thousand Days
You guys are way more artistic than I am, which was fun to hear about! The winner of Kelly Parra's Graffiti Girl, as chosen randomly, is... Amy K! Send me your address, A.
This week, I'm giving away a copy of Shannon Hale's lovely Book of a Thousand Days. I haven't read many books of this kind. You know, set in the days of ladies and handmaids and gentlemen kings. It is such a beautifully written tale, and I thoroughly enjoyed the twists and turns. I think you guys will love it!
So, to win, just tell me what time period you've dreamed of living in. I used to think I'd want to hang out in the late 1950s, with all the gorgeous Grace Kelly-esque styles and the soda-shop dates (two straws, one drink). But then I consider all the social problems that were swirling with racism and the start of the Vietnam war and all that stuff, so I'm not sure that's my ideal era. But I'm rambling.
Anyway, I want to hear from you, so comment below and you're entered! Yay!

I've always liked living now. I'm a modern conveniences kind of girl - my fondness for bathing, in particular, prevents me from wishing to live in a large number of eras. It just seems like each time period has its problems, but I don't mind living with those in ours because I'm already living with them.

Wow, I've been looking forward to reading this one for a looong time! I'm glad you liked it!
I've always loved historical ficion (one of the few genres of books avaliable in my small parochial school, but I went through a colonial era phase when I was younger. I loved any book that was set in that time, and Felicity (the American Girl doll) was my best friend. Some of my favorite books are set in that time period. I don't know what it is...something about the American Revolution and fighting for freedom just gets me unbelievably excited.
Thanks for the chance to win!

I agree with Liviania for some parts, I do like living in this era with all of our cool technology. But, I've always wanted to get dressed up in those huge gorgeous gowns and go to a ball or something

Hmmm... I LOVE living in this era. Technology, equality, and advances in storytelling are some major perks. If I had to pick a past era, I'd like to live in the feudal times. Lords and Ladies and such. Not at the beginning of it though, but at the end of the era, where everything was more modern.

i would love to live in the victorian times (like a jane austen character) or in the 30's ( with 42nd Street(musical) like dresses. and i would love to live in the 50's to with those lovely soda shops indeed!

Hmm...bible times so I could meet Jesus? Otherwise, I agree, now is cool. I mean there are plenty of times I would love to visit... but as for actually living there...not so much.
Posted by lenore | April 30, 2008 7:21 PM
Haha, I'm not sure if this counts, but I'd love to live about 100 years in the future just to see how people are dealing with all our problems in the future.
If it's only in the past, I'd love to live during the Victorian Era in Britian just so I could see Britian industrialize.
Not to mention to see if Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House really hit the mark on relationships back then.
I know. So nerdy

I read that book a couple of months ago. It was soo good!
Oh my gosh. I have always thought I would fit in in anywhere from the 1920s to the 1950s. That just seems like a great era to me. I mean, I know it has wars and stuff, but the positives were really awesome!!
Posted by Meredith Foster | April 30, 2008 9:35 PM
Truth to be told, there are many eras I would want to live in. I so wish I could pause time and jump around from century to century, decade to decade.
I don't think there's one time period I could settle on. I'd hop from the Romans- to the Colonials- to the hippie movement.
It would be so much fun to immerse myself in different cultures. Experience the popular music, clothes, food, literature, and what not.
Become a part of history. =)

I really love the idea of the 40s, WWII era. I know the war was terrible and all, but when I think of that time, I think of how... together the country seemed, working hand in hand to win the war, etc. It just seems like it would be nice to live in a time like that. Sure, propaganda and war and all that stuff, maybe not the best... but man oh man. To live in the time of FDR!
I also like the idea of the 20s. Flappers and jazz, oh my!
Posted by Amy H. | April 30, 2008 10:24 PM
ooohh...I LOVE this book but I don't own it.
Anyway...I love this era. Computers, advanced medicine, etc are all stuff I couldn't live without.
If I had to live in the past I'd probably want it to be during the Renaissance when all sorts of new things were coming up.
Posted by Nabi | April 30, 2008 10:26 PM
I used to want to live in Gone With the Wind days, but what seventh grade girl didn't back in the 80s? Now I'd pick ancient Egypt!
Posted by PJ Hoover | April 30, 2008 10:33 PM
I agree with Liviania about the American Revolution - I think it was reading Felicity that did it for me too!
My second choice would be medieval times but only if I was rich and could afford some luxuries. I think I would require that everyone in my house bath at least once a week. :)
Posted by Em | April 30, 2008 10:48 PM
Oooo! I love Shannon Hale! I wanna win this book!! :P
Like Em, I too would love to live in the medieval times only if I were rich, possibly a princess! :) If not, I like living in this era! Can't imagine being in any other time.

well, all kinds of periods in history interest me. However, i know from history class that women were always repressed, although this degree of repression might not be as severe at times as others. So women did gain respect as leaders, but that was only for a select few, so i think, there's not time like the present. i would definitely not have as many opportunities as i have today at any other time in history.

i love historical fiction but I think I would like to live in the future...if that makes any sense :)
I think the future will be really cool and at the rate we are gaining new information in the sciences and in technology I think in the next century or so there is going to be so many cool gadgets and stuff! like, I'm always reminded of that Disney channel show Phil of the Future with the time travel and the cool gadgets (like the portable donut making machine!). So yeah, i think living in that time period will be cool. thanks for the contest!!

Historical fiction is one of my favorites! I've had Book of a Thousand Days on my wishlist for quite a while now. :P
Posted by ambeen | May 1, 2008 10:36 AM
The Victorian Era always interested me, you know, Jane Austen's time with the empire dresses and cute dialect?
I talked like they did for almost a week and got punched in the face.

I've read two Shannon Hale books recently and enjoyed them immensly - sign me up!
Well, I think I'd have to say that I'm pretty happy with the time period that I live in now. I can't imagine living without indoor plumbing, electricity or computers for blogging!
Posted by Stephanie | May 1, 2008 12:29 PM
I'd want to be an adult in the 50s - so I could write novels for Fawcett in their Gold Medal line. See ... selfish reasons! Ha!
Posted by JoeKinski | May 1, 2008 12:49 PM
I'm just reading "Rebel Angels" by Libba Bray (AGATB), so I think living in 1895 is kinnda cool.
Well, maybe I'd rather live in the future, like in "Uglies" by Scott Westerfeld... I really don't know..
Posted by Irene | May 1, 2008 2:55 PM
I think I would love to go back and visit the 1920's with the bowler hats, cute short haircuts and the flapper dresses. I also like how the womens clothes, the style, was to wear looser clothes its looks comfortable. Its also the time where kids were excited about toys and fairs and they all grew up together. Now all we care about are video games and movies. It just seems like a nicer, easier life.
I loved this book, so i'm so hoping I win.

I'm not sure I could commit to any particular time frame--sure there are time periods that seem interesting and glamourous and exciting, but...you have to ask yourself: what will I have to wear? how are women treated? is hygiene deemed important?...and so many others.
So, I'm liking where I am now. :)

that would be cool

I've always wanted to live in the 50's. At least, I'm pretty sure that's the 50's -- whatever year Grease was set in. Grease has been my favorite movie since I was five and I was Sandy for Halloween for about five years in a row. I've always wanted to see what it would be like to live in that time period. [:
je t'aime.
hope.

I've always wanted to live in the Victorian
Era because the dances sounded absolutely to die for.
The dresses also looked gorgeous yet a bit breath choking. It's so fun to image and dream.

Nothing like the present for me! I am loving it!

I always wanted to live in the medieval times. I would want to find me a nice knight to live with so he could be my protector.

What a great blog question! I've gotta go with the sixties. I mean...hello? Free love and all those amazing bands. YEAH, baby... :) XO

I always wanted to live in the 40-50's because I loved the fashion back then. And I would have loved to meet Doris Day, Sandra Dee and Bobby Darin.
Posted by Beth | May 3, 2008 9:21 AM
It's hard I guess, but I would want to live in the 1920's. Just the atmosphere that era left behind leaves a big impression on me: it's a time before the war where change occurred and new ideas were brought forth. New inventions, new innovations, and a sense of fulfillment.
Posted by Sherry | May 3, 2008 9:36 AM
I've always wanted to live in the days of the suffragettes. I always need something to campaign or crusade about and there was such monumental change in that time that there would certainly be multiple things I could choose from.

I wish I lived in the Tudor period. idk when that is because I don't study British history so I'm not sure of the year but that period is cool. When King Henry the Eight ruled. =]

I would LOVE to live in the 1800s. I read The Luxe and fell in love with the dresses and everything!
Posted by Holly | May 3, 2008 6:55 PM
I love these kind of books!
Posted by Brooke | May 3, 2008 9:13 PM
I want to live in the 1950's because that was
when Elvis Presley became known as "The King of
Rock and Roll." That would be awesome.
Posted by Brittany D. | May 4, 2008 1:08 PM
The Renaissance era! It was so amazing not only because of the beginning of artistic and scientific discoveries, but also because it was an era of romance and chivalry. Sure, the diseases and lack of immunizations and cleanliness would suck, but the clothes would make up for it.
Oh, and with my curvy figure and (once) naturally pale skin, (I'm way too tan now,) I would have been considered a Class-A hottie!
(Lol!)
=)

I do enjoy living in the modern world...but I have always dreamed of living in the early 1800s, like the setting of 'The Luxe' with all those very fancy dresses that would be apart of your every day life =]

The time period I would love to live in is the Medival Times. I don't know why, but I have always had a certain love of anything to do with the Medival Times. I think a lot of the draw is the whole princess thing! I mean really doesn't want to be a princess?? I also love how people treated each other. They were able to trust each other enough to have a barter system and all knew each other.

I would really love to have seen San Francisco in the 1960's. I'm crazy about the radical movement in US history and San Francisco was one of the most liberal areas.

Thanks for the chance to win! I think you are a inspirational writer, and you write in an excellent genre, along with E. Lockhart, Lauren Myracle, Lisi Harrison, Melissa Walker, Sarah Mlynowski, and more. I believe that all of these authors including touching, realistic, and believable novels that we, as young teen readers, can all relate to.

I guess because I was completely caught up in the romance of the movie Titanic, and also because I've always been fascinated with the story of the real Titanic, I would have to say I'd want to live in that time era- the 1910's. I would love to know what it's like on the Titanic. Also, that time period was so full of growth and innovation, at least for America. I think it would have been an exciting and challenging time through which to live.
Posted by Katrina | May 6, 2008 11:38 PM
I've always wanted to have my own knight in shining armor, so I would say probably something like the European Renaissance. But not forever...just for like, a week or something. :)
Posted by Dawn | May 6, 2008 11:50 PM
I'm not really sure if this contest applies to people outside the US (I just moved to Israel), but I thought I would give it a try. :)
I don't really know what time period I would have liked to live in because there are so many different things that have happened, and there were good and bad things that happened in each of them. I wouldn't mind living the 90s again. I loved it :)
But, I think that all of us are so pampered, in a way, with all the things we have today that, if we went back, there would be lots and lots of adaptation to do.
I hope I can be considered for the contest :D

I absolutely love Jane Austen and her fab books. I think I would want to live in that time period. Sort of the Victorian Age with all the women in fancy dresses and the men being total gentlemen. The only bad parts are the corsets and the pressure to get a husband. But I could deal with that I suppose.

I agree with the class in the late 50s. Despite the contraversies, there are problems in every decade. The late fifties were classy, fun, and simple, and I think I could enjoy that emensly
