Win-It Wednesday: The Girl I Wanted to Be and Violet by Design
Thanks for all the fantastic links you guys posted as entries for last week's contest! I got to read an amazing essay about Kurt Cobain by author Stephanie Kuehnert, got to salivate over LA sandwich shops and a Chicago bakery, and got to watch hilarious videos on youtube, among many other online experiences thanks to you guys!
And the randomly chosen winner of a signed copy of Violet by Design (out next week!) is... Deirdre! Email me your address, D.
This week, you're playing for an autographed copy of the above-shown The Girl I Wanted to Be by the lovely and super-smart Sarah Grace McCandless. It's the story of 14-year-old Presley Moran, who has always looked up to her vivacious and charming Aunt Betsi, until the summer she discovers a few family secrets, and the girl she wanted to be slowly falls from her pedestal. It's funny and poignant, insightful and moving. And now you know why I'm not a book reviewer (I'm so bad at this!) but trust me: You'll like this one.
The Girl I Wanted to Be made me think about the girl crushes I've had, both celebrity and real-life. Two latest examples are Rihanna (I want her ever-changing haircuts... more on that in a future blog post) and, someone I met recently, the Lancome VP of Public Relations, Kerry Diamond, who is really nice and totally exudes chic-ness, and who once wrote a book with legendary makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin.
So there you have it. And my question to you is: Who is your girl crush? Celebrity, real life, historical figure--I want to hear! Comment below or on myspace, and you'll be entered to win SG's fabulous book!
Happy Wednesday.
Oh, PS-Next week, in honor of release week (did I mention Violet by Design comes out March 4th? Oh, I did. Sorry.), I'll be giving away a book EVERY DAY. That's five books total I'm giving away, if you're the counting sort. I'll announce the schedule on Friday so you can see what you stand to win. I love contests, can you tell?

I think my "girl-crush" would have to be my mother.
She grew up in a home that, while liberal, was very conservative in terms of dress. She always dyed her hair every color of the rainbow, not caring what people thought, she's an amazing seamstress, knows two languages, and got her degree in political science (I'm hoping to do the same). But after she got married and had two kids (at the young age of 18) she decided to be a stay at home mother and has always cared immensely for me and my sister. She just recently went back to school and got her degree in accounting.
I love my mother, she is everything I want to be and hope to be, she's a true inspiration in my life.

I love Rianna's haircuts! Especially the latest one - so short and cute!
I've always been a fan of short, boyish cuts. The last time I cut my hair I got it short and pixie-ish like hers but it was months ago so it's all grown now.

My girl crush is Anne Hathaway! I've followed her career since the Princess Diaries and love the roles she's done from the Devil Wears Prada to Brokeback. She looks like someone who could be your BFF. :)

KIDDING!
But seriously, Katie--thank you! And I'll be back at the library in April, so hopefully I'll see you!

At the moment, my girl crush would have to be Jennifer Garner.. She seems to have it all together.. Plus, we both had girls a week apart, so we'd have lots to talk about.. A close second, Jennie Finch.
Keri :)

Hm. My girl crush would have to be Emma Watson. She juggles school and a hectic work schedule gracefully and is the opposite of what most young Hollywood actresses are. She is the perfect role model for young kids and an inspiration to everyone. Plus she always wears the cutest heels :)
Kaitlyn.

Maureen Johnson! She is an awesome writer who is very funny (see her blog for evidence), lives in NYC (which as you know is one of my dreams), goes to England a lot (and I love England!), and spends much of her time in the company of other fabulous writers!

Sarah Jessica Parker! I absolutely love Sex and the City--it's how I learned to deal with men. (No kidding!) And she's my inspiration to keep writing. After all, one day I could have a column too! And she has such good fashion sense, and she had that clothes line in Steve and Barry's where all the clothes were under $20.
But overall, she seems so down to Earth. I definitely look up to her.

I think my girl crush would have to be Christina Aguilera (I know, I know! I'm wierd, deal with it lol) She's such a strong person, and she never let anyone keep her down. She's amazing!

I think one person who is my "girl crush" and whom I really respect is one of my girl friends. For privacy's sake, I'm not going to give out her name, but, last year, her mom passed away due to breast cancer, which she was battling for quite some time. But my friend never lost hope, and, when her mom passed away, she was devastated but didn't break down and stayed strong. To this day, she is one of the most cheerful, positive people I know and I admire her for that.

As a guy, am I allowed to have girl crushes? Ha! It almost sounds creepy.
Mine would have to be Rachel Ray though, right now. She's fun, she's cute ... and she knows where to eat no matter where she goes. That's what I want to know....

I have to say that my "girl crush" has to be my mom and my grandma. They are two really strong women, who taught me to just be myself and not to care what other people think of me. They also worked really hard to make me a really polite teenager in a very, very impolite high school. They taught me to always say please and thank you and to follow the golden rule. This is why I think that my mom and my grandma are my two "girl crushes."
je t'amie.
hope.

Okay I just had to throw in my two cents - my girl crushes, hands down, are Tina Fey and Mariska Hargitay from "Law and Order: SVU" - 'course this probably comes as no surprise!
Thanks for the giveaway and contest Melissa!

My girl crush...this is surprisingly hard :).
I'd have to say my childhood friend Jimmitti. She was amazing, not only at school, but also socially. She knew everyone's name, who they were, and was generally the nicest person I'd ever met. She'd never discriminate or think badly of anyone, and I think I model myself after her right now. When I moved away, she was the only person I'd told, and she was the only person who I used to cry over with on the phone. She was amazing.

Well...I'm going to have to go with two. Sarah Rees Brennan and Megan Whalen Turner. I wish I could write like them. Plus, they're both hilarious.

Bonnie Wright, the actress who plays Ginny Weasley. She pulls off the role great, and she's *really* pretty.
